Getting Up For The Let Down

Do you know that feeling where you psych yourself up for something

and think that when it happens, it's going to be sooo awesome and it will literally be something you. will. not. forget.

...and then it doesn't turn out the way you expected it to, and you end up being disappointed from your false sense of expected reality?

Like when you can't wait to eat ice cream and watch Zoolander (orange mocha frappucino!!)

... and then you get so tired and fall asleep before you can start watching Zoolander. Then you wake up the next day and want to watch Gossip Girl and have Chunky Munky instead, but you've got a full pint of Cherry Garcia sitting in your fridge and you can't have it go to waste.

Or when you're at the discount grocery store and you see cereal on sale– which can only mean one thing– BIG SAVINGS

and you decide to buy lots of them, because this is THE way to save on breakfast in the coming months.

..and you go home and realize that there was probably a reason why no one wanted to buy this range of cereal in the first place...

False advertising at it's peak.

... probably because it's sweet and yet every little grain still manages to encompass that cereal-in-water taste.

And your greed has left 4 packets of cereal packaged in what I'll call an "indie whole foods font" sitting in your kitchen cabinet. And guys. Besides being organic and sugar-free and artificial-flavouring-free it's also It's GLUTEN-FREE (!!!!) which is totally the peak of conscious grocery shopping.
So really, it's great savings and healthy eating until you realize that at some point in the coming weeks you'll trudge out anyway for real Lucky Charms.

Or when you go to a job interview and get hired on the spot...and you spend the next day waiting for a phone call you were promised...

..and then waiting turns into a week...

....and your phone hasn't been on silent since

.....and you don't know if you should call back or not out of fear that maybe you actually did get the job, but your phone call might annoy your kind-of boss, and you might kind-of get fired but how can you get fired anyway if you weren't really hired in the first place? Were you even hired in the first place?? Is life but a dream??

Or when you buy a new dress and can't wait to wear it and then you look for the only pair of seamless underwear you own and find it....

in the dog's crate along with all his all his worldly possessions.

And until you buy a new pair, or somehow manage to rid yourself of fear of societal judgements over a little VPL, you will not wear that dress.

My 14-year-old self's iPod would tell 22 year-old me to "stop getting up for the let down".  It's great advice from an emo band.

(PS: I found Jay's unused tablet at home and I'm having lot's of fun drawing with it).

22 April 2015

I live near a 7-11 and every day on my way out, I see a man with a dog, standing outside the shop busking. Sometimes we drop change in to his cardboard box, other times he sees me walking Joggy and stops to say hi to him. ('Hi, lovebug!', he chirps to him.)

Recently, I've started spending time at a 24 hour coffee shop at night, and I've realized that he's always here. He comes in around midnight, but his dog is not in sight. He writes a lot. He takes his coffee with milk and cream.

Then I see him again the next day, in front of 7-11, with his dog.

For the longest time, I thought this man was homeless. I was wrong. He's not homeless. He's lonely.

Chaaaaanges... I've never been! good! with!!....

Hiiii, guys! I'm currently in the library with a giant cup of coffee and plans to pull an all nighter. I've recently tried the Cornell note-taking method (makes me feel like Andy from The Office saying this), and I've found it to be really effective. So that's one change I've been making in life.

Other changes include:

  • Getting a Phillips Airfryer and cutting down on eating out because I'm making awesome dinner  for us every night. I also make healthy snacks in place of unhealthy ones, like apple crisps and kale chips, which means I'm almost a Vancouverite now.
  • Signing up for a gym membership. My favourite machine in the gym right now is the one that makes you pretend you're rowing.
  • Selling prints on Society 6–Check it outttt to validate-my self promotion here, and maybe my rent and moves in the future, who knows?
  • Re-watching Gossip Girl. I don't know how this is a change, but watching this just made me cringe a lot and wonder why I ever was obsessed with a show with a totally unbelievable plot line.. love childs? Fake deaths? Gentlemen's clubs???? Why, Sarah???
  • Also, I do our laundry regularly now. Nothing spells I'M AN ADULT!! more than having enough socks and underwear to last you throughout the week.
That's really all I have to say for now, I've got tons of coffee running through my veins, mostly because I asked for an extra expresso shot, and I have to get back to making notes. Have a great week!

6 April 2015

I'm back!!

Hi guys!! It has been a month but... I'm back, I guess. I've been taking time off to kind of find myself and figure things out, and it has been great so far. Every couple of days or so I have a not-so-great one, but it's not all that bad. Again, thank you so much to anyone who took the time to contact me. It really means a lot (and I'm sorry if I left your email sitting in my inbox–I promise I've read all of them, the first week of my internet hiatus was a bad one re: crappy job interview, adjusting to new changes, but that's for another time).

Anyway what I've been up to mostly still revolves around long walks outdoors with Joggy. And of course I'm here to share pictures. Caution, lots of green ahead.

The other day, we took a wrong turn and wound up getting lost. It turned out to be great because we saw a different part of the park we had never seen before, and we found a ton of dandelions. I blew them at Joggy,  half-expecting him to treat them like he would with bubbles. It was great.

Jw and I at Formal!! Formal's always a weird time because I always come down with a sinus infection, and my dress plans always, always fall through. I've never once wore the dress I ordered specifically for formal to formal.

You can't really tell (it's so hard to get a picture of this, i've been trying to do this without disturbing the birds and every time my efforts don't pay off )  but this is a Great Blue Heron !! We saw our first one a couple of weeks ago and they're here for Spring, I think.  Whenever they fly towards the pond, the other ducks fly away. The first time we saw it, I very daftly asked Jay if that was a vulture. The guy behind us told us it was a Heron (I misheard and went home and googled 'Herring', and found pictures of fish instead). The second time we saw one, I told Jay it looked like the stork that delivered babies. Then a lady told us it was a great blue heron, thereby putting an end to my birdistential crisis.

We also saw and heard a woodpecker for the first time, ever. I loved the sound of it. It kind of sounds like this but it's a lot richer, and hollow-sounding in real life. It reminds me of the wood instruments they use in Taoist prayers.

Geese have started hissing at us, and I guess that means one thing.... BABY GEESE ARE IN THE MAKING!! (!!!!)(!!!!!!!!) I think they hatch in early May. Joggy gets scared of them.

Yesterday was Easter, we went for a long walk in Stanley Park and went on trails that we've never been on. I thought we'd get to see beavers at Beaver Lake, but all we saw were mosquitoes, and all we got were mosquito bites. It was also pretty nice seeing floppy-eared bunnies for like, 3 seconds, and watching moms taking pictures of their kids lying amongst daisies. I also saw little girls making daisy chains. It was kind of weird because it seemed really normal for them, but it was something I only heard of while growing up (I don't think any kid raised in Singapore has ever made a daisy chain..).. for a while all I could think of was, "it's a real thing!!" cause up til then I had only ever read about it. It felt like when you see a semi-famous person in real life. Sort of.

Anyway, that's been mostly what I've been up to. I've been eagerly waiting for summer and shorts weather. For now, I'll be content with FINALLY being able to order iced drinks and the coffee shop because the weather permits it.

PPS: I want to take the opportunity to rave about Kendrick's To Pimp A Butterfly. It's good. So good. So clever.  That is all.

2 March 2015

Sunny days, stay a while.

Hi all! First of all I want to say thank you to all my friends who read this page. (I realize I'm beginning to sound very full of myself here, but Imma let me finish). Some of you have been so nice to me since my last post (rant?) and I really appreciate it. I'm really shy and I don't want to randomly pop a "are you being extra nice to me because you read my blog?" in the middle of our conversations, but if this sounds like you, thank you so much. I'm happy that there are people who care.

Anyway, sunny days have come in abundance and I want the sun forever!!!!! I'm currently writing this in a coffee shop with the sun shining bright outside, not a cloud in the sky. I'm also having a London Fog, if that matters. Right now I'm just patiently waiting for summer and all the hikes I'll go on... I say it a lot but I really do love summer on this side of the world. Everything is beautiful and bright, days are long, and nothing beats shorts weather. And sunny days are good for thinking about the future, new cities, and moving :) it's all good.

Last week was the final episode of Parks and Rec, and I feel like it's the end of an era– Parks, 30 Rock, and The Office... (Community before the whole Dan Harmon fiasco?). It made me very sad. I liked everyone's endings, mostly Ron's.. I'd like to have that kind of life someday, I guess?

Anyway, this playlist pretty much sums up how I feel (and basically feels like beautiful BC!). I love it so much, I've had it on repeat.

21 February 2015

Reading week, and other things.

Hi all! We've been having ridiculouslyyyyy good weather this week. I'm so happy! The sun's always shining and there haven't been gray skies, so there's no room for gloom at all. Cherry blossoms are blooming and I'm just sitting here giddily waiting for spring (and then summer!!!). Here are a couple of pictures from (amazingly!) good week.

We sat by the lake watching ducks swim by! For some reason Joggy takes interest in crows and seagulls but not ducks, so it's good that we get to watch ducks swim by in peace.

We've also been taking long walks by the beach whenever we can. Just yesterday we did three hours (but also because I dropped my sunglasses halfway and didn't realize it til we were almost home, so we went back and looked for it. I kinda thought it was gone for good but then Jay combed the slippery rocks for it and found it! I felt like Britney Spears in Oops I did it again.)

Walks by the Point Grey seawall. I love looking at the houses there, they're all pretty but it's so fun picking out which house theme is the best one of all and imagining a 700 sq ft gym and 100000 sq ft kitchen facing the sea and things like that. I can't wait to make some dolla dolla bills!!!

I went up to Whistler with my sorority sisters. It was kinda spontaneous and it felt good just doing something on a whim, it's been ages since I've done something like that! Whistler is beautiful (and expensive, womp womp). I'd love to live in a town by the mountain some day, after I've lived in the woods and by the sea. Maybe I'll retire in a mountain, who knows ;)

We got a fireplace and sauna and our lodge was kind of like a loft which made me excited because i love things like stairs in apartments. Let me emphasize that I REALLY like stairs in apartments, so that made me happy.

I left Whistler with the intention of learning how to ski... #tropicalcreatureinthegreatwhitenorth

Had coffee at 49th Parallel. The lady beside us was judging me so hard as i snapped this so there wasn't much time for angles or lighting and stuff like that.
Snapchat quality but anyway, look! We build Joggy his own tent and now he is the king of his own castle ;)

We've been furnishing the new place and this is my little corner where I listen to music / read / make music. I planned on uploading this to Instagram with the caption "my dog is so hipster now we've created a monster", but I didn't.

We've been walking in forests. Of course.

We bought him to the vet for a check up / his yearly vaccination. It was his first time there and while he was getting his shots, he leaned in to Jw. It was the sweetest thing and I'm so glad he trusts us now!

Bagels at Solly's Bagelry on Broadway!! So good.
Some stuff after the cut about anxiety and life, it's not really important / relevant to this blog but I thought I'd just say something about it.

16 February 2015

Hi all!

877 page views today! That's the highest it's ever been!!! Hi to new readers (and spam bots, I guess). I kind of want to believe there are more readers than bots here. I'm making pasta and then later today we're heading to the forest! I've spent a lot of the week re-watching episodes of The Office and Season 8 doesn't seem as bad as it was before.. maybe because now that the show's gone everything seems gold and impermanent. And I skipped Goodbye, Michael as always.  I'll blog a little more this week about life and why we moved, once the dispute resolution period its over. In the mean time, keep up with my adventures on Instagram, maybe?

7 February 2015

New changes.

Hi all! It has been one busy week, but my lifestyle has changed drastically – cue awe and shock and laughter... I want to say I've cut drinking coke, but I've replaced that with consuming grape soda instead. I've been eating a sickening amount of kale, I have one serving of kale-something every day.. today I had kale and yam. Yesterday it was kale, broccoli, and cashews. Before this, the only thing I knew about kale was that it was on Beyonce's sweater in the 711 video. I've also been having a lot of miso. Then again, these drastic lifestyle changes have occurred over the course of a week, so who knows what next week will bring?

Some pictures from week in the new neighbourhood (I've included a ton of pictures of Joggy, just because he walks everywhere with us and I am obsessed with him. Major life changes for Joggy include having to wear a dog pheromone collar, and now, instead of sniffing the ground on walks, he looks up at trees for squirrels. The past week has also taught him, if anything, that there is no point wasting his energy chasing after wild bunnies or ducks because he is always on leash.)

Some guy's awesome car.

We've been having a rainy week, so he spends a lot of mornings stealing the blanket and wrapping himself in it.

Duck watching for us, duck-hunting for him.

Jw and I think that if it snowed, this slope would be perfect to sled down on!!

Visited Great Dane Coffee yesterday! It was the lunch crowd (think a longgggg line), but the barista gave me a smiley face on my coffee and it made me feel special, because my friends got regular boring coffee-circles on theirs. I went on to their Instagram and saw that lots of people got pandas and flowers and pretty latte art so then I felt a little less special. Still, I appreciate the gesture– a smiley in a sea of boring circles is still something!

We sat outside and this squirrel approached us (and everyone in the vicinity), hoping to get a piece of our food. He hopped on tables, and jumped on chairs, but he was a very clumsy squirrel– we saw him fall a couple of times. Then he stole a girls sandwich and everyone didn't find him cute anymore.. :( he came back five minutes after, and i think he went off to hide the food, but Jw tells me that squirrels always forget where they hide things! I hope he remembers where he hid it before it gets mouldy.

We got 2 tables from the 1920s. This is one of them... the little ones use it as their playground.

Joggy uses it as a headrest sometimes.

Hiiii Dumpling!!I can't wait til summer so he can head outside to play, it's too cold outside for him right now so he can't come out on adventures and walks with us. In the mean time, he enjoys a lot of watermelon and chicken bits while waiting for the sun to shine.

The first wild bunny we saw! We've seen many since, and I've stopped approaching them because they get scared really easily. Sometimes they appear on the beach and are less afraid of humans.

That's mostly what we've been up to– now I have to get back to making my soup. Change kind of means having to fit in soup with 7 different kinds of vegetables as well (with kale, of course.)
